In today’s digital world, the value of data cannot be understated. Constant access to data is vital for ensuring uninterrupted business operations, as any downtime can result in significant financial losses. Furthermore, unforeseen catastrophic events can lead to permanent data loss. To mitigate such risks, it is crucial to store digital data both at the primary storage location and an external backup or disaster recovery facility.
Myanmar, situated in a region prone to natural disasters, faces risks such as earthquakes and tropical cyclones. The importance of robust disaster recovery measures is highlighted by historical data. Over the last two decades, earthquake geographical surveys recorded more than 2,000 earthquakes in Myanmar. Additionally, severe storms have caused catastrophic damage; for instance, in 2008, Cyclone Nargis, a Category 4 cyclone, made landfall in the Yangon region, resulting in widespread devastation.
Most recently, on March 28, 2025, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, with its epicenter near Mandalay in the Sagaing Region. While Yangon, located approximately 600 kilometers away, experienced mild tremors with no reported significant structural damage, the quake had severe impacts in central Myanmar. This event serves as a stark reminder of the country’s vulnerability to seismic activity and reinforces the necessity of a comprehensive disaster recovery strategy.
